Choose a useful reference photograph
Look for a photograph taken near the animal’s eye level in soft light. Check that the eyes and muzzle are reasonably clear and that the pose is comfortable. Use photographs you own or have permission to use.
Make several small sketches before choosing a composition. A cropped ear or shadow may be deliberate, but decide that before beginning a detailed drawing. Never disturb or restrain an animal to obtain a pose; a calm existing photograph is often enough.
